Yesterday the organizers behind the largest WordPress event of the year WordCamp US 2020 announced that WordCamp US 2020 is cancelled.
In may 2020 we wrote about how the event because of the Corona pandemic was transformed into an online event.
The organizers are devastated over the decision but it couldn’t be any different:
It is with heavy hearts that we have made the decision to cancel this year’s WordCamp US event.
In light of the continued pandemic, online event fatigue for attendees, organizers, and volunteers, and the desire for WordCamp experiences to be traditional WordCamp experiences, we have made the difficult decision to stop this year’s planning, and cancel WordCamp US 2020.WordCamp US 2020
Online event fatique
The decision was taken primarily because of the Corona pandemic’s widepsread influence on american society.
But also because of what can only be described as an online event fatique in the digital communities around the world.
Because of the many bans and restrictions on physical gatherings around the globe, the number of online events exploded in the spring/summer of 2020.
This has resulted in a clear online event fatigue not only in the online communities, but in general as well.
Here at A-support we must admit the fatigue is present.
Our participation rate in online events went up by several hundred percent during the first part of the Corona crisis.
Now we carefully select in which online events we participate.
We wnat to keep focus on what’s important; helping our customers with their online activities.
Online presence is necessary
Although WordCamp US 2020 has been canceled and we all feel a certain tiredness because of the many online events, we believe that a broad online presence will be needed for a long time to come.
The corona crisis is probably not goingto go away just yet.
Online work and online presence really proved it’s value during the Corona crisis.
It’s one of the few good things that has come out of the crisis.
